It appears as though the gun control debate will be back in 2018 and likely 2020 to play a significant role in the elections. As a reminder, here is the actual text of the 2nd Amendment:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
This 18th century sentence was not written as carefully as it could have been, leaving wiggle room for interpretation, but it seems to say that the right to bear arms applies to keeping a well-regulated militia.
But even with an interpretation that ignores the "well regulated" part entirely, we have precedent for limitations on personal freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights. For example, even though we are granted freedom of speech in the 1st Amendment, it is illegal to scream "fire" in a crowded theater.
This is because there is a line past which the harm to society outweighs the benefits to personal freedom. As a civilized society, we understand this and craft laws that try to create a balance between the two.
Let's work together to find that balance when it comes to gun ownership and safety.
